16mm Film Editing

Schools of Public Engagement

Subject code

NFLM

Course Number

3610

Description

Limited to 12. Students finish films begun in 16mm Film Production. Learning both analog and digital processes, they begin on the Steenbeck flatbed editing table and then edit their own films digitally using Final Cut Pro. Exposure to both editing methods, analog and digital, emphasizes editing as an artistic and theoretical practice at the core of filmmaking. All projects are finished to film print. Editing design and theory are studied and filmmakers are guided through all phases of postproduction as student films evolve from assembly to fine cut of the five-minute non-sync project. Projects include editing (assembly, rough cut, fine cut), soundtracks (recording wild sounds, sound transfers, using a sound effects library), making and shooting titles, preparing the film for the lab (original cutting, hot splicing, A&B rolling or single-strand originals, answer prints with optical sound), and obtaining a release print. Outside postproduction facilities open to independent filmmakers are identified, including film labs, sound mixing studios, optical houses, and stock footage and sound houses. Prerequisite: 16mm Film Production (NFLM3600) or permission of the film program advisor; call 212.229.5899. Students must have footage ready to edit, transferred to mini-DV tapes.
